The restavek system in Haiti troubles me too. The numbers are staggering - 300,000 children out of a population of 7 million!! Unfortunately all the aid Haiti gets does nto help this since is it is part of the culture now and very hard to unentrench even with laws...Only giving the parents work and the ability to care for their own kids at home can slowly stem the tide. Makes our lives look so wealthy...
I agree, it is soooo disturbing and has become the "norm" within Haitian culture... and even when families don't have a child retaveks they usually have hired help doing the same type of shores for less than reasonable wages. I know Tamaya b-mom works/lives at a families house 6 days a week and make less than $30 a month and is having to raise 6 children + herself on that, not to mention her children are left at home to fend for themselves while she is out working for her wages. I cringe when I think of the life Ty or Tamaya may have faced had their bio-parents made different decisions... of course that is assuming they would have even survived old enough to make it to that point. Hopefully with our help sending 3 of her sibs to school we may be able to change the cycle for them... I think education is a good start to change some of the patterns...but thats just making a difference for 3 kids.
To know me is to know my infinite passion for my family. I enjoy being a wife, a mother, a sister, a friend and a daughter. I take time to enjoy the many blessings I have been given to the fullest. I appreciate all the great people that surround me. My life is my journey of miracles and of dreams come true.

This saddened me to the core. Oh, how I wish I could just scoop those children up and bring them here.

Sue,
I am comment-less. What can one even say?
Thanks for posting it.
